You’re Never Too Old To Be Young

A lot of people shy away from doing new things because they think they are too old. In my family, there is no such thing. My mom started Medical School at age 35, and my auntie graduated from law school at 50.

My grandfather is 97, he keeps his mind and body active and is always encouraging his grandchildren and great grandchildren to “Have Fun”.

When I told him I had joined a band, he throw his hands up in the air and said, “That’s so great!!”

You are never too old to do the things that you love, or to try something new that interests you. To think that you have to be in high school and practicing in your parents’ garage in order to join a band for the first time is a myth. And also just the kind of story that can be a huge roadblock that keeps you from doing the things you want to do. We tell ourselves these stories all the time.  In fact, sometimes we need to indulge our funny habits or silly inclinations to help that part of ourselves grow up. As adults, we can care for ourselves, provide for ourselves, indulge ourselves, comfort ourselves—in a way the grown-ups in our lives never could when we were children.

After a certain age (I don’t know, kindergarten?) we become more worried about failing, and that can keep us from trying things. Or we start to think that there is a timeline that we need to adhere to for doing anything important, like going to grad school or getting married or having a certain type of job. But as someone who has had an unconventional life, a life that has made it impossible to follow the expected “timeline” at times, I can assure you that the timeline doesn’t…..actually….exist!

Isn’t that great? So go do what you love! If you love it now, if it interests you now, then now is exactly the right time, dontcha think?
